Premise
The Lifestream.
An ethereal force that flows throughout the multiverse, suffusing it with life. We are born of the lifestream and when we die, our experiences, our memories, all that make up who we were and what we accomplished are returned to the stream.
Upon its gentle currents all life, humanity and civilization is built. And, in times of need, the flow of the Lifestream increases, seeding a world with old souls, mortal heroes from across the multiverse who can aid the faltering world in its time of need.
In the land of Astraen, an uneasy truce stands between two mighty kingdoms of Liciae and Dalvarus. Decimated by a destructive war that nearly destroyed them all, the people of Astraen are weary and battered by war and conflict. This tenuous peace, maintained by the multinational organization known as the Crimson Rose, is tattered and frayed, and they fear it might break at any moment. Were that not enough, in the midst of their troubles, a new threat has exploded onto the scene. Known as Archons, these creatures appear in ordered ranks and raze entire towns of all life and human creation. These Archons are nigh immortal and cannot be harmed by common arms and magicks.
But the Lifestream cares for its own. As this new threat emerges, so too does the means of its undoing. Throughout Astrean, seemingly ordinary people are experiencing the Echo. Awakening to memories of their prior lives, they are bringing with them knowledge and experience from times past and skills that do not exist within Astrean to bear. It is only the bearers of the Echo that can stand against the Archons, keeping Astrean safe for all who dwell within.
Refracted Light is a Final Fantasy-based Reincarnation Panfandom Roleplay. Players may play characters from other canons that are reincarnated into this new setting, crafting an AU backstory to fit into the world at large. Upon entering the game, the character will experience their first Echo, a powerful memory that will give them insight to their past and grant them the power to fight against the Archons.
Serving one of the two great warring nations of Liciae, the Kingdom of Light, or Dalvarus the Empire of Darkness, or the beleaguered peacekeepers the Crimson Rose, players will need to navigate the murky and complicated relationships between the two while trying to fight against the Archons. Players will also have the option of taking on the roles of NPCs with a variety of goals and aspirations to create and cultivate their own plots and stories.
Refracted Light is a plot-based game that strives for high degrees of player freedom. The great nations are controlled by PC moderator characters who direct the action by responding to events. However, players are highly encouraged to take ownership of the setting, using NPCs to help push their own personal plotlines and helping build up the setting by submitting ideas or even starting their own company within the game.
