Crimson Rose

The Crimson Rose
The Blossoming Peace of Astraen

Description: The Crimson Rose is an semi-voluntary peacekeeping force within Astraen. Established after the war, members forsake their core allegiance and instead pledge to uphold peace, order, and cooperation.

Nestled at the center of the DMZ between Liciae and Dalvarus, the Crimson Rose maintains an armed presence in both capitols, in most major cities, and along most major roads. Their personnel are typically the first to arrive on the scene in cases of armed conflict between nationalists but they cannot involve themselves in any nation's internal affairs without explicit approval from the nation's ruling body.

Although they are permitted to defend themselves, partisans on both sides will often attack them knowing they will likely see no reprisal. Since the Crimson Rose is so dedicated to the ideal of peace and staffed by so many idealists, it is rare for them to respond making them frequent targets for local n'er do wells. The political restrictions sometimes make this even more a necessity, getting into an altercation with a citizen could spark an international incident and do major harm to the organization which exists solely at the pleasure of the two great nations.

That's not to say the existence of the Rose is perpetually in danger, however. They exist due to a treaty between the two countries and can only be dissolved by a renegotiated treaty. As such the Rose understands their impact and stature and strives to be even-handed in their judgement and intervention. Realistically, this manifests as the organization being very careful to intervene in both countries as equally as possible, to the point where complex metrics and formulae tracking this are delivered to the Lord Commander daily.

The Crimson Rose also has a powerful and inalienable right, one they are loathe to invoke but will use if necessary. Known as the Peacekeeper's Duty, any full-fledged commander of the Rose may, in theory, conscript any member of any nation to their order, with the exception of the royal families. This is seldom used however, as the political implications are often not worth any potential gain. These days it's primarily used to remove the worst partisans to a boring desk job where they can't rabble rouse, or to gain access to a particularly useful prisoner. Conscripted members are typically not viewed as true Roses, which is defined by commitment to the ideals of the order. How can one who is forced ever understand or fight under their banner?

Core Beliefs and Values: Duty, Temperance, Reconciliation, Redemption. The Crimson Rose fully understands and owns their status as the Peacekeepers of Astraen, and commitment to that duty is paramount in the hearts of the Roses.

A certain temperament is absolutely necessary for a successful Rose, one must be patient in the face of adversity and defeat, for that is what one will be most well-aquainted. They must always look to forgive, to seek a peaceful solution, and to rise above petty disagreements, as well as the occasional fist to one's face. The life of a Rose is hard and thankless, but it's (allegedly) very rewarding.

Major Resources and Industries: As the Crimson Rose occupies a small DMZ and the nations are required to support them, their primary exports are Peacekeeping resolutions and strongly-worded disapprovals.

Eidolon of the Crimson Rose:

Maduin: The enigmatic Maduin is the sponsor of the Crimson Rose. Known as the Gate Guardian, he is said to have opened the doors that the Eidolons crossed when they first entered the human world. He is said to continue to guard the Gate, preventing humans and Eidolons from crossing without due cause. Wise but somewhat reticent, Maduin is said to advise the Lord Commander on matters of state due to his devotion to the cause.

The Rose Garden: The DMZ currently occupied by the Crimson Rose was once known as the Fields of Blood. As an open and disputed territory between Liciae and Dalvarus, they hosted many pitched battles and untold thousands of soldiers drew their final breath upon the field. After the last war, anti-war activists came together to plant flowers as a symbol of peace, trying to reclaim the field as a symbol of life.

No matter the flower, however, nothing would grow save one: the white rose. However, when they emerged, their petals were stained a deep blood red. These stained roses became the rallying cry of the anti-war movement that eventually lead to the formation and eventual official recognition of the Crimson Rose.

Today, the Rose Garden stands as a testament to peace. The red roses grow in neat, immaculate gardens surrounding a refurbished keep. The keep has two open doors facing either great nation and the primary thoroughfare between Liciae and Dalvarus passes through it.

Inside the border agencies for both nations perform their routine inspections and tax collection for travelers. A number of duty-free shops also line The ground level, the income being a primary means of support for the Crimson Rose. The upper levels are primarily for the Roses, housing a barracks, training ground, private officer quarters, mess hall and a number of other amenities.

The Lord Commander: The current Lord Commander of the Crimson Rose is Sinbad, a Merchant-General of great renown who has long advocated a peaceful solution to the war. A Hume in his mid-thirties, Sinbad rose to prominence in his early teens, conquering the seas and establishing a powerful mercantile company that managed to corner trade on a number of exotic goods from far-off locales.

Sinbad has formed a Pact with the elusive Eidolon Maduin, and his is a constant sight at both courts, trying to push a more peaceable agenda. That said, he seems to have other goals in mind beyond just those he espouses.
